It aims to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning the factors that affect the long-term well-being of agricultural resources, and places emphasis on the managed use of these resources.

Applied Maths is offered as one of the Science Group of subjects. As the name suggests this subject involves the application of mathematical techniques to solving problems, mainly of in the areas of mechanical and static systems. The subject is offered at higher or ordinary level but generally it is most suitable for students who are also doing higher level maths and physics. For students who have an aptitude for problem solving it is a most rewarding and enjoyable subject.

Art and ‘Art History and Appreciation’ have been taught and promoted within SMGS over the last 30 years, catering for all levels and interests both within and outside the curriculum.

Biology is the study of life. Through the study of biology students employ the processes of science to explore the diversity of life and the inter-relationships between organisms and their environment. They become aware of the use of living organisms and their products to enhance human health and the environment. They are provided with the knowledge, skills and understanding to pursue further education, training and employment in biology-related fields, and to make judgements on contemporary issues in biology and science that impact on their daily lives and on society.
The school is very involved in all Science exhibitions, in 2009 3 students took part in The Young Scientist exhibition under Biological & Ecological Sciences category. These students also took part in the Scifest at C.I.T in April 2009 and won in their category.

This is a practical and vocationally-oriented course that introduces students to the world of Business in a straightforward and logical way. It aims to create an awareness of the importance of Business activity and to develop a positive and ethical attitude towards it.. The importance of people in Business is highlighted. The course sets out to illustrate the process of setting up a business and developing a new product or service. It emphasises the importance of good management and deals with skills and activities necessary for good management practice. It also deals with the impact of technology, foreign trade, global firms and competition and with business structures and the national economy

Business Studies provides a ground work for Senior Cycle subjects. Business Studies is compulsory for all incoming First Years. Business Studies is an optional subject from Second Year.

Leaving Certificate science syllabuses are designed to incorporate the following components: science for the enquiring mind, or pure science, to include the principles, procedures and concepts of the subject as well as its cultural and historical aspects. Science for action, or the applications of science and its interface with technology science, which is concerned with issues – political, social and economic – of concern to citizens.
SMGS offers chemistry at higher and at ordinary level. Students who liked the chemistry section of the Junior Cert. Science course should seriously consider taking it for leaving cert.
The school is actively involved in Science Exhibitions and competitions, including the Salter's Festival of Chemistry.

The aims of junior cycle CSPE are to develop active citizens with a sense of belonging, a capacity to gain access to information and structures relating to the society in which they live, an ability and confidence to participate in democratic society. Students will be encouraged to go out into the community, meet local people and participate in community events.

Computer studies is not an exam subject, however technological development is recognised and the need to develop this skill is promoted with all students receiving computer classes when possible. The school has 2 fully equipped computer rooms catering for all class sizes. Students are in a controlled and safe environment while accessing programmes during computer classes.

Construction Studies introduces students to the knowledge and skills associated with construction technology and construction materials and practices. This is achieved through theoretical study and integrated practical projects which provide a basis for the thorough exploration of materials and processes
