Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal has a proud record in the annual Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. In this section we will showcase some of the innovative and imaginative projects put forward by pupils of the school over the last 25 years.

Eric Higgins PDF Print
Eric Higgins won two awards at the 2009 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. His project involved the construction of a safe, reliable communications system for use on building sites or other noisy environments. He won the Comreg Award for the best project at the exhibition on the topic of communications and second prize in the Senior Individual Technology Category.
 
Eoin Boland PDF Print
Eoin won first prize at the 2008 Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the Senior Individual Social and Behavioural Category. His project was an investigation of the effect of the physical environment in classrooms on ability of students to learn. He investigated temperature, carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in a large number of classrooms and compared these to optimal conditions. He presented a very clear report on the factors he had investigated and obviously impressed the judges who duly awarded him first prize.
 
Anthony O Brien PDF Print
Anthony won 1st. prize in the Senior Individual Technology category at the 2007 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. This was a marvellous achievement by Anthony who won 2nd prize in the same category the previous year. He showed great interest, enthusiasm and ability to complete a complex project on developing a novel way to make the engine modifications needed to run a car on different petrol / ethanol mixtures.
 
Deirdre Murphy PDF Print
Deirdre had a magnificent win at the 2001 Esat Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. She presented a superb project which won her first prize in the Senior Individual Biological and Ecological Sciences category.
 
Eoin O Connell PDF Print

Eoin O Connell made a spectacular debut at the 2001 ESAT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition when, as just a second year student, he won first prize in the Junior Individual Technology category and the inaugural Analog Devices Prize for the best overall Technology project at the exhibition.

A few weeks after the exhibition Mr Bill Hunt of Analog presented a data projector to the school as part of Eoin's prize. In the following summer, Eoin visited San Francisco and Boston and toured the Analog Devices facilities in those cities.

Cryptogaphy - A new algorithm versus the RSA

Sarah Flannery, who entered her project in the Senior Individual Section in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences Category at the ESAT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in January 1999, won the top prize – Young Scientist of the Year 1999. She went on the represent Ireland at the European Young Scientist competition in Greece where she won the top prize in her category.

At the 1998 exhibition Sarah won the Intel Excellence Award and subsequently represented Ireland at the Intel ISEF in Forth Worth, Texas
