SMGS Rugby

SMGS Jnr Rugby squad were today beaten by Bantry in the Munster Mungret Shield semi final. The game, played in Muskerry RFC was a tale of two halves where, with the wind, Bantry led after 40 mins by 19-0.

The second half belonged to the Blarney lads and with 10minsremaining, Blarney had levelled the game at 22-22. Back came Bantry and laid siege on the Blarney line where they finally grabbed a  try to lead 27-22.

Not giving up Blarney attacked from the restart but with Bantry getting in a clearing kick, our lads were disappointed to see the ball being caught by a Bantry player so far offside it was comical to watch as was the ref awarding the try to then seal the game for Bantry on a score line of 32-22.

The attitude by the SMGS lads was top class all day, their response to the halftime deficit and their team spirit to continue to play rugby when at times the game gave way to some off the ball scuffles. Our time will come and it was great to see such a huge squad present with some very talented younger players waiting in the wings to impress.

The season continues with a TYO 7's competition, U15 and U17 Blitz days as well as 1st Yr games.
